Eye Health Q&A

Why is eye health important?

Eye health is a vital aspect of your overall health and wellness. And when something goes wrong with your eyes, it can significantly impact your life. Eye problems can range from minor nearsightedness to severe conditions like macular degeneration, which can lead to blindness.

To give your eyes the best care possible, schedule regular eye exams that allow your optometrist to monitor your eye health and screen for severe conditions. Other health issues, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can significantly affect your vision and cause irreversible damage if left untreated.

If you experience any symptoms of eye trouble, it’s important to seek medical attention. Dr. K recommends calling his office if you experience:

  • Severe or lasting eye pain
  • Unexplained blurriness
  • Discharge or excessive tearing
  • Flashes of light
  • Vision loss
  • Light sensitivity

How can you protect your eye health?

You can protect your eye health by having annual eye exams with your optometrist and by only wearing your prescription glasses and contact lenses. Never wear anyone else’s corrective lenses.

Wearing sunglasses and wide brim hats can reduce damage from the sun. And safety goggles protect your eyes when you work in or around dangerous areas.

Dr. K also suggests:

  • Eating a well-balanced diet
  • Quitting smoking cigarettes
  • Taking breaks when you work at a computer

What are retinal screen photos?

After dilating your pupil, Dr. K will use a digital retinal camera to take a picture of the interior of your eye and its blood vessels. He can then assess the health of your retina and look for signs of conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes or even cancer. The earlier he detects such conditions, the more manageable they are.
